KARGIL MARTYRS REMEMBERED

The Prime Minister with the family members of Kargil martyrs

The Vice President, Mr Krishan Kant led the nation in paying homage to the heroes of the Kargil war who made supreme sacrifice while defending the country's borders two years ago.

The Vice President, Mr Krishan Kant, Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, Defence Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, Minister of State for Defence, Mr U V Krishnam Raju, three Service Chiefs and Defence Secretary placed wreaths at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate on the occasion of the second anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. A flypast by the Indian Air Force was also organised. At a function, the Prime Minister, Defence Minister, Minister of State for Defence and the three Service Chiefs joined 1,500 schoolchildren in lighting candles in memory of the martyrs.

The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee announced two medals— 'Operation Vijay Star' (for operations in Kargil theatre of war) and 'Operation Vijay’ (for mobilisation elsewhere in the country) Medals. He also said that the government had set up a special committee under Defence Minister to extend affordable medical facilities to all ex-servicemen. The committee has also been asked to formulate a national welfare policy for ex-servicemen by year-end, he added.
