NCC Girls Trekking in Himachal

 
 

The All India NCC Girls Trekking Expedition for 2001 concluded at Joginder Nagar in Himachal Pradesh. Over 1000 NCC girl cadets from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan belonging to both senior and junior wings of the NCC participated in the expedition. Col Bijay Singh, the trek Manager and the NCC Group Commander, Shimla said that the aim of the trek was to promote adventurism, create awareness about ecology and environment, promote national integration, educate youth about flora and fauna, local customs and food habits of the region.

The base camp was established by Lt Col GS Shahi of 2 HP Battalion NCC, Mandi at Rajeev Gandhi Post Graduate Degree College, Joginder Nagar. The 90 km long trek had passed through Barot-Kothi Kohar-Rulang village-Billing-Bir-Chauntra before culminating at Joginder Nagar.

The cadets enroute visited ayurvedic herbarium, ayurvedic pharmacy at Joginder Nagar, Baijnath Temple and Buddhist monastery at Bhattu.

Flagging off the expedition, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Dr Suraj Bhan stressed the significance of the adventure sports. He lauded the efforts of NCC and added that such events build bonds of friendship and national unity. Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha speaker, Mr Thakur Gulab Singh, Education Minister, Mr I D Dhiman were also present on the occasion.
