An
air show was organised by Indian Air Force at Tambaram. It created an
awareness among the youth about the opportunity of an adventurous career
available in the Air Force.
The
programme was interspersed with fly-pasts by eight HPT-32 aircraft in Alpha,
Tango and Diamond formations signifying the airpower,
training and excellence. The awe-inspiring fly-pasts symbolised the skills
of the IAF pilots.
The
day indeed belonged to Akash Ganga team led by Sqn Ldr S
Venkatraman from the Para-troops Training School, Agra. Wg Cdr A K
Varsheneya, Senior Education Officer, IAF Tambaram with 14 years of
experience in Parajumping was the first to dive into the sky. His mission
was to inform about the conditions in the expanse of the sky to the
members of the Akash Ganga who would dive within minutes. At one time, it
seemed that the sky was cluttered with canopies of striking colours. It
was a perfect free fall for all and some ventured to do a few manoeuvres
in the sky.
A
demonstration of rescue and commando operations was presented from Chetak
helicopter roaring a few feet above the ground. A rope was lowered and
a man in need of help was hooked and pulled on to the helicopter. In
another manoeuvre, commandos slithered down a rope from another helicopter
and took up position to charge against a target ‘enemy’.
On
static display were MiG-21, Kiran, HPT-32, Ajeet, Chetak helicopters,
missiles, weapons and armament. The air show was organised as a prelude to
the millenium’s first Air Force Week celebrations. Gp Capt V K
Yajurvedi, Station Commander, IAF, Tambaram said that the air show
demonstrated the reputation of the Flying Instructors School, Tambaram
which produces experts to teach flying. The institute also imparts
training to foreign candidates.
