A Cradle of Learning

The Mahar Regimental Centre is the training centre for newly enrolled infantry recruits in the Mahar Regiment. The centre coordinates various regimental activities including welfare of Regimental soldiers and their next of kin. The GD recruits are trained for 34 weeks here at the centre. The training is carried out on state-of- art equipment which include SAT-70, computers and computer based training (CBT) packages and liquid crystal display (LCD) projector.

The recruits also visit integrated composite training complex which gives an overview of all the military subjects to a fresh recruit trainee. These subjects are weapon training, tactics, familiarisation with terrain available in our country, first aid, combat survival, human rights, field engineering etc. Introductory training on NBCW is imparted in NBCW information room which contains basic and advanced information as well as NBCW equipment. The recruits are trained on indigenously manufactured 5.56 mm INSAS rifles. The training has contributed immensely during operation Vijay. With an aim to enhance the social and intellectual capability, the recruits also take part in various activities like games, debate, picnics and cultural programmes.

The centre also carries out the recruitment of GD/tradesmen recruits primarily for sons and brothers of servicemen, ex-servicemen and of the deceased servicemen. Provisions of instant enrolment is frequently applied for enrolling sons of those JCOs/OR s who have laid down their lives in various operations while defending the nation. The War Memorial Boys Hostel was established in 1971 at the Regimental Centre. It is for the sons of those war heroes who died in action. The alumni of this hostel have risen to become doctors, engineers and other prominent professionals. At present, there are 54 students in the hostel who study in various local schools.
