Appetite for Adventure

Adventure activities form an essential component of training in National Cadet Corps. They help to instil leadership qualities, mental and physical robustness, espirit-de-corps and self-confidence among cadets. These activities include trekking, rock–climbing, mountaineering, para-jumping, scuba diving, water-skiing, sailing, kayaking, yachting, hang-gliding, para-sailing, microlight flying, slithering and cycle and motorcycle rallies. The aim is to expose as many cadets as possible to the world of adventure.

NCC, so far, has conducted 50 mountaineering and over 1800 trekking expeditions. Every year, two expeditions are conducted in which 20 boys and girl cadets participate. Of late, a 19-member Girls Mountaineering Expedition to Gangotri-II (6590 mts) in the Garhwal Hills was conducted. The expedition was led by Lt Col JS Dhillon. In addition to mountaineering expeditions, NCC also conducts trekking camps. Every year 14 all-India trekking camps are organised by designated directorates which include 10 camps for boys and 4 for girls. Each camp comprises 1000 cadets from across the counry at a given location to have the feel of adventure together.

All NCC directorates conduct para-sailing, a thrilling sport which is catching up fast as an adventure activity. Para-jumps are organised at Army Training School, Agra. Here the cadets experience the thrill of flying along with the soldiers of the Indian Army’s Parachute Regiment.

Diving has gained popularity in NCC in recent years. Scuba diving courses are being conducted at Kochi, Vizag, Mumbai and Delhi with assistance from Navy diving teams. A whitewater rafting node is coming up at Haridwar to encourage this sport among the cadets. Similarly, microlight flying is a popular adventure activity in the NCC. Almost all the Air Wing cadets get at least one or two sorties under the guidance of an experienced pilot of IAF. Rock climbing camps are organised under Karnataka and Kerala Directorates of the NCC at Somanahali and Neyyar Dam and at the Officers Training Academy, Gwalior.
