Setting the Saddle

It is a fact that no regiment can tread the winning path unless its men are well taken care of. A soldier wants his dependents to be secure in case of any untoward incident. In this respect, Skinner’s Horse has been doing a yeoman service for the welfare of its serving and retired personnel. With a plethora of activities, it ensures that the kith and kin of its personnel are not left neglected. Especially in the field of education, it has been providing all amenities.

Sikander Boys’ Hostel, named in the memory of the founder of the regiment, was opened to provide boarding and lodging to the children of the deceased/handicapped and other personnel of the regiment. The aim is also to help them continue their education or acquire vocational skills. Adult literacy courses for women are conducted regularly.

Awareness workshops on the importance of the empowerment of women and the girl child, legal rights and privileges of women and their financial emoluments and dues are also organised. Training in various vocational arts like tailoring and embroidery, knitting, block and fabric printing, soap-making, stuffed toys, paper bags and candle-making is imparted to provide job opportunities to soldiers’ wives.

Regular pension is also provided to war widows and they are felicitated on all regimental get-togethers. Competitions in drawing and painting are organised at the Family Welfare Centre. The regiment also conducts classes in music, dance and drama for children. Picnics and tours are a common feature of the regiment’s welfare activities.
