He
was a brave soldier who had weathered the trials and tribulations of
operation Parakram. On September 20 last year, while on routine
patrol, he stepped on a mine. The effect was devastating. He lost both his
legs in the explosion. He was carried to nearest Field Hospital where
doctors told it was a miracle that he was still alive.
His doctors sent him to Pune by
train on January 1 last where he was picked up and brought to a nice,
clean ward at ALC. He was given a well-cooked, tasty hot meal and was told
by the polite staff about how they were going to make him near fit.
Next day, the soldier was assessed
and measured for his artificial limbs. Ten days later, he was called for
his trials. In the mean time, he was given
intensive physiotherapy, psychological counselling and taught about the
triumph of mind over matter.
The soldier was a very tough young
man who epitomised the indomitable fighting spirit of human being and
displayed the courage that the soldiers are known for. On January 22, he
finished his trials during which he learned how to walk and balance
himself with his new artificial limbs.
On January 28, exactly four weeks after he came to
Artificial Limb Centre, the soldier walked out with a smile on his face.
He returned to his family with lot of cheer and confidence. He broke the
shackles of self-doubt and ALC helped him do it.
