Against
the backdrop of clouds of dust and smoke and deafening roar of firing from
the tanks, more than 1000 spectators witnessed the synergy of fire power
and mobility of the Indian Armoured Forces at the KK Ranges, Ahmednagar.
The two-day demonstration was jointly conducted by the Armoured Corps
Centre and School (ACCS) and the Mechanised Infantry Regimental Centre (MIRC).
ACCS and MIRC are the premier training establishments for the forces. They
also train officers and enlisted men from Artillery, Air Defence Artillery
and engineers from a number of foreign countries.
During
the demonstration, the first shot was fired as a welcome and mark of
respect to the Commandant of DSSC, Lt Gen PPS Bindra. About a dozen tanks
fired the shots which included three BMPs from the MlRC. The first to fire
was the Vijayanta followed by T- 55 , T- 72 and the BMPs. The
target area comprised eight targets and they were numbered from left to
right and were painted white for easy recognition. The targets were old
tank derelicts. In addition, a number of white targets were also engaged
as soft targets. The indigenously produced Vijayanta tank achieved
the frequency of firing 32 rounds per minute by the killer crew led by
Capt Rohit Bhatia of 67 Armoured Regiment under the overall incharge Lt
Col S Jha of 13 Armoured Regiment. The pulverising effect was in ample
evidence as a combat team proceeded to attack the nominated objective. A
tactical scenario was pointed and the firepower of the combat team showing
the level of shock effect and devastation was on display. The entire
procedure was carried out while incorporating the support of BPM I and BMP
II.
