Best Vet Hospital

Fiftyfour Advance Field Veterinary Hospital has been adjudged the best Remount Veterinary (RV) unit of Indian Army and was awarded the ADG RVS Trophy during Senior RVC Officers’ conference held at RVC Centre and School, Meerut Cantt. This award has been given for the year 2002.

The ADG RVS trophy is awarded to an RV unit of Indian Army for maintaining high standards of physical health and battle fitness of animals and troops.

The hospital provides vet cover to all Army animals deployed in the valley which comprise pack animals (horses, mules) for transportation of ammunition, operational stores and rations and dogs for explosive detection and tracking the militants in counter-insurgency operations. Col NS Kanwar, Commandant of the hospital who is also a Senior Advisor (veterinary pathology) to the Additional Director General, RVS has taken keen interest in the development of infrastructure in the hospital which helped to control the outbreak of diseases among animals deployed in the valley.

Apart from maintaining the battle fitness and good health of animals deployed in the Army, this hospital has also earned the goodwill of local population by providing veterinary care to their sick animals by organising vet aid camps in the remote areas of the valley. This hospital is also helping the local public by keeping ponies fit for carrying the pilgrims during Amarnath Yatra. In addition to this, the officers and men of the hospital also provide vet cover to the injured and sick wild animals at the rescue homes of Jammu & Kashmir Government. The hospital is also imparting training in animal management, first-aid and laboratory techniques to the field staff of Department of Wild Life Protection, Jammu and Kashmir.
