Chief at Kanpur

Chief of the Army Staff, Gen JJ Singh was on one-day visit to Kanpur where he visited Small Arms Factory (SAF), Ordnance Factory and Central Ordnance Depot (COD). The General was accompanied by Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma and other senior officers from the Army Headquarters.

At SAF and OFC, Gen JJ Singh inspected various weapons produced by them and also viewed the production-line of these weapons. He also held discussions with Mr PK Mishra, Director General, Ordnance Factories and Chairman, Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), Kolkatta on various production and quality control aspects of the plant. The General expressed his deep satisfaction over the state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and quality control systems available at SAF and OFC. He emphasised the importance of indigenous production of weapons that can, in quality, match the best available anywhere in the world. He also appreciated the research and development efforts of these organisations which aim at upgrading the technological inputs.

This was followed by a visit to COD where the Army Chief was received by Brig H Chawla, Commandant, COD. The Commandant spoke at length about ongoing modernisation activities with specific reference to security measures, fire safety arrangements, environment-friendly production techniques, welfare measures for manpower personnel, cost reduction in production by enhancing productivity and optimising the manpower pool. The General also inspected various articles produced at COD ranging from clothing and shoes to tentage.

During the last leg of his visit, Gen JJ Singh inaugurated an automated warehouse. He congratulated the engineers and staff of DRDO, MECON and BHEL and urged them to synergise their efforts to complete the modernisation work of the entire depot in the targetted time-frame.
