Iranian Delegation at AF Station, Jodhpur

An Iranian Air Force delegation led by Brig Gen Reza Pardis, Commander of Iranian Air Force, arrived on a days visit to Air Force Station, Jodhpur. The delegation was received on arrival by Air Cmde AR Nigam, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station, Jodhpur and senior officers of the station. The aim of the visit was to strengthen co-operation between the two air forces, and also to gain from the vast experience of the Indian Air Force, Brig Gen Pardis said.

During their visit, the delegation interacted with Air Force personnel and visited various units of the station.

A Rare Deed Indeed

Hav Bhagwan Singh and Hav AD Singh of 119 Assault Engineer Regiment were among the six persons moving from Chandigarh to Khem Karan by Amritsar bound Frontier Mail. They boarded the train at Ambala Cantonment on May 15th last at 1 am. They were in coach S-3.

At about 4 am after crossing Ludhiana railway station, they heard people shouting "fire fire" and running into S-4 from the adjoining bogie S-2. These two soldiers showing quick presence of mind immediately pulled the chain and brought the train to a halt. They helped the panic sticken passengers to disembark and continued doing so till it became too suffocating. Then, they succeeded in entering the burning coach S-4. Showing exceptional courage they rescued two children, one lady and one male passenger from the burning coach. Realising that if coach S-2 was not decoupled, the casualty rate would increase. Then they assisted the train guard to decouple coach S-2. Their act of bravery saved many a life.

INS Talwar Commissioned

INS Talwar, the lead ship of the Krivak Class (Project 1135.6) guided-missile frigates, built by Russia to Indian specifications, was accepted and commissioned into the Indian Navy at St.Petersburg, Russia. The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Madhvendra Singh was the Chief Guest for the commissioning ceremony. Also present were Mr Raghunath, the Ambassador of India and Admiral VI Kuroyedov, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Mr OB Shuliakovsky, General Director M/s Baltic Shipyard, Mr AY Belyaninov, General Director, Rosoboronexport and many other Russian dignitaries.

The induction of Talwar into the Indian Navy is a major step in the modernisation of the Indian Navy. Speaking on the occasion, Admiral Madhvendra Singh lauded the shipbuilding skills of the Baltic Shipyard and the design capability of the Russian shipbuilding industry. He also said that INS Talwar and her sister ships Trishul and Tabar would significantly add to the power and reach of the Indian Navy. The Talwar Class showcases Indo-Russian joint production capabilities as the ships of the Class have have quite a few systems of Indian origin and manufacture, including their anti-submarine sensor (sonar) suite and complete communication equipment.

INS Talwar will sail from Russia and will arrive India in early August this year after making port visits to Portsmouth (U.K.), Toulon (France), Athena (Greece), Port Said (Egypt) and Djibouti.

Joint Winners

One hundred-and-fortythree Movement Control (MC)/Movement Forwarding (MF) Detachment, New Delhi and 137 MC/MF Detachment, New Jalpaiguri were declared joint winners in the first Inter MC/MF Detachment competition of the Indian Army.

The performance was judged by a team of officers from Movement Directorate in consultation with local station commanders to assess the facilities provided to the defence personnel/transients at the MCO location.

Lt Gen Krishan Pal, Quarter Master General presented the banners to Lt Col V Saran, MCO, New Delhi and Lt Col Om Prakash, MCO, New Jalpaiguri. MCO Detachments of Jammu, Jabalpur, Secunderabad, Chennai, Miriani, Deolali were other participating units.

Lt Gen Krishan Pal emphasised the need to provide good quality services to the defence personnel in keeping with the motto of the Movement Directorate 'Shaan Se Aur Shauk Se’.

Cycle Expedition

The second battalion of Mahar Regiment, has completed 60 years of glorious service to the nation. To commemorate the historic occasion, a cycle expedition was flagged off by Brig Ranjit Prasad, Station Commander at Pangode Military Centre. The 1460km route was covered in 25 days.

Lt DS Pradeep led the 12-member expedition. The flagging off function commenced with a typical Maharashtra dance Lezium by Mahar Jawans.

ColBP Ramesh, deputy Commander, Col Prem Prakash, Commanding Officer, Mahar Regiment, Col Haricharan Singh, Commanding Officer, 3 Madras, other senior officers,jawans and their families attended the flagging-off function.

The expedition has been planned with the twin aim of inculcating adventure spirit as well as familiarising the participants with the terrain and sanctuaries in the state.

Roaring Fifty

Fifty Light Air Defence Regiment popularly known as Roaring Fifty celebrated its 40th raising day somewhere in the western sector. The unit has served with distinction in all major operations since raising, including operations at high altitude and counter-insurgency areas.

Speaking at the special sainik sammelan, Col PS Jaggi, Commanding Officer, lauded the unit for its stellar performance in operation Parakram and exhorted all ranks to rededicate themselves to the service of the nation. A variety of activities, competitions were organised to mark the occasion. The celebrations culminated with a splendid cultural programme presented during the regimental barakhana. Later, Mrs Jasminder Kaur Jaggi felicitated the participants of the cultural programme. Trophies were presented to all those who excelled in their duties.

Relief Operations in Sri Lanka

Recently, the central and southern part of Sri Lanka were hit by severe floods. The Government of India, in keeping with its friendly relations with neighbouring states, responded swiftly to the request of the Sri Lankan Government to provide humanitarian assistance. The Army, Navy and Air Force swung into action to provide the necessary relief.

The request was received on May 18 last and the Indian naval ship Sharda set for Galle in Sri Lanka on the same night. The Army and Air Force also mobilised their resources and were air borne by forenoon of 20th. In one of the first major integrated relief operations, the country displayed its ability to respond swiftly to carryout relief operations on foreign soil. The Armed Forces established relief camps and provided medical assistance to control any major epidemics like dengue, malaria and typhoid in the affected districts. It also provided succour to the people devastated by the floods.

OPERATION SADBHAVANA

Many primary schools are set up all over the country under the government’s Rajiv Gandhi Swarn Jayanti Pathshala scheme. One such school is located in the remote village of Indas in Nagaur district of Rajasthan. The school caters to the children of dhanis around the area. Due to paucity of funds, it lacked basic amenities and educational infrastructure for an all-round development of the children.

The 323 Air Defence Regiment was deployed in Rajasthan sector during operation Parakram. The unit decided to adopt the school under operation Sadbhavana. It took a series of steps to provide amenities to the school.

Firstly, the unit renovated the school building by carrying out repair works, white washing etc. Later, it provided black boards and other stationary items. To encourage children in sports and games, it has developed a small playground and provided necessary sports infrastructure.

The unit gifted one Pentium-II computer to the school, making it first in Rajasthan among the number of Rajiv Gandhi Pathashalas to have a computer. It also provided computer instructors for training of the students and the staff on its usage. In addition, 323 AD Regiment carried out large-scale afforestation drive on the wasteland around the school, with the participation of the villagers.

Young officers, JCOs and unit education NCO volunteered to take classes on various aspects of national integration and development to imbibe correct values in the young impressionable minds.

The efforts put in by 323 AD Regiment for the development of the school under operation Sadbhavana in spite of its operational commitment were lauded by all villagers and the civil administration. The unit’s efforts on this front were hailed by the local media.
