OPERATION IN SARP VINASH

Operation Sarp Vinash was launched by Romeo Force of Rashtriya Rifles in the Hill Kaka in Surankot, Jammu. Surankot region is devoid of any developmental activity. It has become an ideal terrain for the militants to continue its activities. The area lying towards the west of the Pir Panjal ridge is remote and rugged, with dense forests and is snow - bound till April.

The terrain came into focus after a surrendered terrorist revealed that some terrorists were hiding in bunkers on the Hill Kaka top. The well planned anti-terrorist operation named Sarp Vinash was launched in April, last. The operation began with the construction of three helipads in the region to cater logistic support.

According to Maj Gen Hardev Lidder, GOC, Romeo Force, Rashtriya Rifles, an aerial survey was undertaken by a recee helicopter in the Hill Kaka area that traced foot steps in the snow on a hill top. Then, the Army started clearing the Hill Kaka area and killed thirteen terrorists around Point 3680. It also carried out massive search operations in and around the area.

When the operation picked up momentum, Romeo Force achieved success in recovering diaries, cell phones, large quantity of arms and ammunitions, medical kits and ration from the hide-outs. Sixty-five terrorists have been killed so far and over 90 hideouts have been destroyed. Weapons like recoilless rifles, rocket propelled grenades, light machine guns and AK-47 rifles have been seized.
