Boxing Championship

 
 

The 58 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) Boxing team lifted the Eastern Command Boxing Championship trophy for the year 2003-04. In the finals held at the Zoro Bakshi Hall, 58 GTC won nine gold medals and one bronze medal. Altogether, eight teams from Army participated in the championship. Brig WJB Sturgeon, Commandant, 58 GTC gave away the prizes to the winners.

The pugilists of 58 GTC also excelled in the Eastern Zone All India Invitation Boxing Championship held at Kalimpong recently with a rich haul of five gold, four silver and nine bronze medals.

It may be mentioned that 58 GTC has a rich tradition of nurturing young talent and producing pugilists for national and international competitions. Asia’s first gold medalist, Padam Bahadur Mall, Sub Virender Thapa, Sub Maj S Thapa, Narender Rana, Lok Bahadur Gurung and Nb Sub Som Bahadur Pun - all of international repute are the products of 58 GTC. Brig Sturgeon presented cash awards of Rs 2000, Rs 1500 and Rs 1000 and bronze medal winner respectively as a special gesture on the occasion.
