Armour Day

The Armoured Corps celebrated Armour day with enthusiasm. On this occasion, a wreath laying ceremony was held at Teen Murti - the Cavalry Memorial. Wreaths were laid by senior serving and retired armoured corps officers. Amongst them were Lt Gen SS Mehta, GOC-in-C Western Command, Lt Gen JS Verma, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, Lt Gen SK Sharma (Retd), President of the Cavalry Officer’s Association and Lt Gen Arvind Kumar DG, Mech Forces. All armoured regiments were represented by their lancemen attired in their ceremonial uniforms. The 61st Cavalry was represented by their Mounted Sowars on colourfully attired horses.

It may be recalled that on May 1, 1938 the first cavalry regiment of the Indian Cavalry bid farewell to its horses and was formally equipped with tanks. In commemoration of this event, armour day is celebrated annually.

The Indian Cavalry has a proud heritage and a glorious history with some of the regiments tracing their origin as far back as 1773. Over the years, the Armoured Corps has acquitted itself admirably in every sphere - be it battle, counter-insurgency operations or sports. The corps has earned laurels and built up its own distinctive traditions. The Corps has produced a large number of luminaries in service, in government department and private sector. Amongst them include Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh who served with the Central India Horse. The Cavalry regiment also produced six Army Chiefs so far.
