‘Aarohi’ Sets World Records

Any record is a source of professional satisfaction and if it is a world record the joy and sense of achievement is limitless. But what the "Jimmys" have achieved is much beyond it. They created not only one world record but a number of them and that also during a single mountaineering expedition christened as Aarohi. The team was from the Siachen sector and the destination point was Teram Kangri - III, a 7195 metre high peak adjoining the Siachen Glacier. The challenge was accepted by the Corps of Signals and an action plan was prepared and approved by the SO-in-C, Lt Gen DP Sehgal.

The selection of team was not an easy task as more than one hundred Signallers serving with 3 Infantry Division Signals Regiment volunteered themselves for this expedition. Finally, a 22-member team under Col Dinesh Kumar was selected to undertake the daunting task of scaling this virgin peak and also the difficult Indra Col, a 5775-metre high mountain.

Lt Gen D P Sehgal flagged off the expedition at Karu. The assault was launched in two columns. One column comprising two officers, one JCO and nine Other Ranks headed for Indra Col whereas the other column comprising two officers and eight Other Ranks headed for Teram Kangri - III.

The climb along both the routes continued for about eight days. The climbers in both columns maintained good speed and progressed steadily towards their respective goals. One column headed by Col Dinesh scaled the peak successfully within the stipulated time. The peak was named ‘Mercury Peak’. It was recognised by the Limca Book of World Records with the following citation: ‘‘The mountaineering team of Corps of Signals led by Col Dinesh Kumar and Maj Rajesh Kumar scaled the virgin and the unclaimed 7195 metre Mercury Peak in the Teram Kangri group of Karakoram Range of mountains. The team of eight climbers made the summit without the aid of oxygen".

The feat has also been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. The summit at Indra Col was also made and both the columns returned safe and sound after accomplishing their missions.

It was a big achievement as the ‘Jimmys’ did it in a record time without using oxygen and without losing any climber. The fitness of team could be judged from the single fact that during the entire expedition there was no evacuation and no one even fell sick.

The victorious team was flagged in by Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes and Lt Gen NC Vij, Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
