Adventure at IMA

Adventure activities form a part of routine in the Indian Army. They inculcate a sense of purpose, determination, camaraderie and courage, all of which are hallmarks of a warrior. To imbibe the spirit of adventure in the Gentlemen Cadets (GCs), multifaceted activities covering a wide panorama of adventure sports are organised at Indian Military Academy (IMA). Expert coaching and latest equipment available in the world market is procured for conduct of adventure sports. Adventure training weeks are slated and GCs get an opportunity to kindle the spirit of adventure in them.

The GCs are sent on various hikes during the mid-term break which include treks to Joshimath, Hemkund Sahib, Badrinath, Pong Dam, Valley of Flowers, Kedarnath, Chakrata, Tiger Falls, Nainital, Yamnotri, Gangotri, Shimla, Varanasi and Kulu – Manali. There were numerous multi-activity hikes and cycling hikes to Hathi Paon, Raiwala and Asan Barrage also.

Recently, a mounted safari on horse and camels was conducted at Mundotha which is 25 to 30 kms from Jaipur. From Mundotha, the riders rode to different places covering 25 to 30 kms each day. The places they visited were Bashwa, Chagrotha, Sundriawas, Joli and Cabridingri. Two officers and 25 Gentlemen Cadets participated in this safari. The Commandant of Indian Military Academy, Lt Gen TS Shergill, who is a fond rider also joined the safari for two days. The safari covered a total distance of 151 kms riding over rough and rugged terrain of the Rajasthan desert.

Some of the GCs went for para- gliding in Bangalore and para-motoring at Raiwala. They also visited various operational areas such as Sriganga Nagar, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Ferozepur and Amritsar. Two officers and 50 GCs visited Bikaner and it was their first desert experience. The thrill of riding on a BMP and an Arjun Sark was indeed a memorable experience for the participants. The visit to a border outpost further added to their excitement.
