Lt Gen RK Nanavatty, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command inaugurated Viklang Kalyan Yojna, a humanitarian project launched jointly by Viklang Chhatra Trust, Akhnoor and the Army. The project aims to provide the Jaipur Foot free of cost to those who have lost their lower limbs due to landmine blast, enemy shelling, accidents, militancy related occurrences or polio. Lt Gen Nanavatty was accompanied by Mrs Suniti Nanavatty, President Army Wives Welfare Association, Northern Command. Also present on this occasion were Lt Gen TPS Brar, GOC 16 Corps and Maj Gen Sudhir Sharma, Mrs Sudhir Sharma and Justice (Retd) RP Sethi.

Viklang Chhatra Trust is a charitable organisation set up in 1980 at Akhnoor by Mr Joginder Chhatrapal, a polio victim, with the aim to provide succour to the disabled. During the 22 years of its existence, the Trust has conducted 86 eye camps restoring the vision of a staggering 6600 cataract affected persons. It has also provided about 1600 aritificial Jaipur Foot limbs, calipers and tricycles to the amputees.

A camp conducted at Akhnoor was organised with active participation of the Army's Northern Command under its Sadhbhavana scheme. Technicians from Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti, Kota, Rajasthan took the measurement and started fabrication of the artificial limbs. The Army Commander launched the camp by fitting the first artificial limbs. Mrs Suniti Nanavatty also fitted artificial limbs to handicapped girls and donated a wheel-chair to one patient.
