  237 Engineer Regiment at Anjar

On January 26, this year 237 Engineer Regiment was put on a one-hour notice for an airlift to Bhuj. Engineer equipment from Engineer Park and some plants from other engineer units were also grouped with the unit to be inducted in quake-affected areas. The regiment was earmarked for conducting rescue, retrieval, relief and rehabilitation operations at Anjar. Keeping the magnitude of the disaster in view, the regiment was organised in four relief companies with three field companies and one adhoc company created from Regiment Headquarters and Field Park Company. The four columns were tasked to conduct their operations from four different directions. This strategy paid rich dividends as many victims were rescued alive from the debris when all their kith and kin had lost hope to see them alive. At Ganga Chowk, the last survivor of Anjar, Mrs Mangla Behn was rescued after 120 hours of earthquake by a platoon of two lady officers. The retrieval of cash and documents of the Bank of India, relocation of Khavda village, rehabilitation of KKMS Girls High School and Seth DAV High School and removel of unsafe structures in the famous Jassal-Thoral Shrine reposed faith of the locals in the men-in-uniform.
