The
Indian Military Academy organised about 25 adventure hikes for
Gentlemen Cadets (GCs) during a one-week adventure training
break in which about 1000 GCs and 50 officers participated.
Two of the adventure training camps were organised under the
aegies of Army Adventure Cell, Army Headquarters. There were
para gliding at Pithoragarh and wind-surfing and water sports
at Kota. Other hikes like rock climbing, trekking and scuba
diving were organised in the Garhwal Hills. White water
rafting and rappling at Shivpuri were organised near Rishikesh.
A
paramotor drive was conducted from IMA to Paonta Saheb -
Chhutanpur - Roorkee-Raiwala-Doiwala and back to IMA. In
India, this adventure sports is available only at IMA.
A hack ride for about
200 kms across the Shivalik Hills from IMA to Roorkee through
Rajaji National Park was another interesting hike in which
about 40 GCs covered the distance on horseback.
Other features included
hikes to Ranikhet, Lansdowne, Subathu, Corbett National Park,
Ramnagar, Kilbury, Binayak, Kunjkharak, Chirgaon, Sangla,
Govindghat, Tapovan, Gaumukh, Nagtibba, Hari-ki-Dun and some
other inaccessible places.

A
cave exploration hike to Patal Bhubneshwar in Kumaon Hills
exposed the GCs to a natural cave which had a 3x3 feet
entrance. This led to a 65 feet deep cave which opened up to
another cave of
188 meters in length and 88 feet in depth.
Some of the hikes were
independent in nature in which no directing staff accompanied
GCs. The GCs were given ration, tentage and transport.
A few hikes of cycling
were also organised to Asan Barrage, Hathi Paon, Chamba,
Shivpuri, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Rajaji National Park. On
their return from these hikes the GCs had a treasure of
experience with them. They had returned with the conviction
that ‘tough gets going when going gets tough’. These hikes
enabled the GCs to develop leadership traits to organise more
adventure trips independently.
