  Brave Hearts on Beas

Keeping up with its reputation and rich traditions, a white-water rafting expedition named Garud Shakti was launched by 9 Guards. In a daring feat, a team of one officer, one JCO and 14 jawans led by Abhishek Koushik, rafted down Beas River from Kalath near Manali to Pandoh near Mandi.

The expedition was flagged off by Lt Gen Kamal Davar, GOC 11 Corps. After carrying out extensive training for one month at Raiwala, under the aegies of AWWAS Nodal Centre, the expedition was launched on Beas River. Beas is considered to be one of the most challenging rivers. The team commenced its journey from Pandoh, which is located at 22 km from the source of the river. The river, in this stretch, has very less water and is laden with rocks and boulders. The team successfully negotiated this portion without any major problems and halted at Raison.

The second leg of the expedition commenced from Raison. Beas, in this region, passes through deep gorges, narrow passage and is fraught with rapids of various grades. The team braved numerous rapids but came out successfully and halted at Pirdi (Kullu).

In its course, Beas is joined by Parvati River near Bhuntar increasing the volume and flow of water thus making rafting very difficult. During the next phase, the team faced numerous challenges. In one of the difficult rapids, one rafter was thrown off the raft. The team displayed presence of mind, and rescued the team member.

Col SK Yadav, the Commanding Officer, joined the team and rafted with them during second and third phases of the expedition.

The final phase of the expedition was very adventurous as the whole river turned into a stretch of rapids of grade 4 and 5 intensity. In one of the serious accidents, while negotiating a grade 5 rapid, the raft turned turtle. All the members were struck in a whirlpool and were under water for almost a minute. It was their superb training, willpower and courage, which saw them through this mishap. In yet another accident, one rafter was thrown off the raft. Lt Abhishek Koushik risked his own life to save the fellow rafter.

The team finally reached Pandoh to receive a warm welcome by its commanding officer and others. The expedition, conducted under the aegis of Army Adventure Wing, was flagged in by Brig Rajinder Singh, Commander, Flamming Arrow Brigade.
