Indian
Army Launches DZAN
The
Delhi Zone Access Network (DZAN) was inaugurated by Lt Gen
Prakash Gokarn, Signal Officer-in-Chief at Army Headquarters
at a function held at Delhi Cantonment. The driving force for
such a network has been the dire need of security. This
network has been designed to provide reliable, secure,
failsafe and responsive communications in areas of Army group
usage in Delhi and has inherent protection features, providing
the vital redundancy, which is critical for Army usage. The
state-of-the-art technologies viz Synchronous Digital
Hierarchy (SDH), Optical Fibre Cable (OFC), digital loop
carrier equipment, etc has been used extensively in DZAN.
Speaking
at the inauguration ceremony the SO-in-C said, ‘‘the
state-of-the-art broadband access network of Indian Army
established in Delhi has provided the right platform for
proliferation of information technology and provisioning of
reliable and responsive communications". Present on this
occasion were senior Signal Officers from the Army
Headquarters and representatives of the industry who had
participated in the implementation of this important project.
"This
is the first network of its kind in Delhi and this
state-of-the-art network is a big step in the direction of
information technology, which is taking deep roots in the
Army. ‘‘This would greatly assist in maintaining
operational and technology edge over our adversaries"
commented Lt Gen Gokarn, lauding the industry for implementing
the project.
The
network is designed to meet the growing bandwidth demands of
various Army organisations located in various Army hub centres
in Delhi and to facilitate proliferation of data networks,
which has been a major thrust area of the Army.

Ammunition
in Rajouri Unearthed
In
a search operation, Army units recovered 81 rifle grenades, 12
hand grenades, 105 rounds of AK ammunition, 20 kilograms of
explosive and eight remote control devices at Rajouri in Jammu
and Kashmir. This ammunition and explosive was kept in three
ruck-sacks hidden in Namblan forest.
Soldiers
of 2 Sikh had launched a search operation in Namblan forest to
flush out the militants. On reaching almost the middle of the
forest the troops recovered large quantity of ammunition and
explosives dumped in three ruck-sacks.

Lt
Gen Bhullar Retires
Lt
Gen M S Bhullar, Quarter Master General retired after 39 years
of service to the nation. Commissioned into the Sikh Regiment,
he has had the distinction of holding various prestigious
posts including staff, national and international assignments.
Lt
Gen Bhullar commanded 9 Sikh in counter-insurgency operations
in Nagaland from 1977 to 1979 and later an Infantry Brigade
and an Infantry Division as part of a strike formation. His
last command assignment was that of 16 Corps on the Line of
Control in Jammu & Kashmir from mid 1994 to 1997. During
this tenure he was also the Security Advisor to the Government
of Jammu & Kashmir. His last appointment was the Quarter
Master General at Army HQrs, which he had the distinction of
holding for about three and a half years. Lt Gen Bhullar was
awarded Vishisht Seva Medal in 1980 and Param
Vishisht Seva Medal in 1998. He has been holding
prestigious posts in various sports management bodies
including President of the Equestrian Federation of India,
Vice President of the Asian Equestrian Federation, Chairman of
the Development Committee of the Indian Hockey Federation and
Chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament.

Long
Defence Management Course At College of Defence Management
The
31st Long Defence Management Course commenced on June 19, 2000
at the College of Defence Management, Secunderabad. The course
which is of 44 weeks duration, is being attended by 72
officers of the rank of Colonel and equivalent of the other
three Services and MOD apart from one officer each from Sri
Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Botswana. In addition to the
teaching of modern concepts and techniques of management for
achieving higher leadership effectiveness, the present course
curriculum also includes a comprehensive combat capsule
package.
Delivering
his inaugural address, Maj Gen KC Padha, the Commandant of the
college exhorted them to appreciate the challenges that the
defence forces are likely to face in the new millennium. A
clear understanding about our role will lead us to a rational
force restructuring, meticulous financial management and a
thorough understanding about the wider canvas of international
relations, he said.
Emphasising
the importance of defence forces being the role model for
values, Maj Gen Padha called upon the participants to
understand the need for inter-service cohesion and mutually
supportive and appreciative civil-military interface.

Symposium
on National Security - Maritime Dimension
A
one
day symposium on National Security - Maritime Dimension was
inaugurated at Rajaji International Institute of Public
Affairs and Administration, Bolarum, Secunderabad. It was
inaugurated by Vice Admiral Madhvendra Singh, Flag Officer
Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. Vice Admiral Singh
stressed the need to protect the territorial waters and
security of the Country and stressed on the importance of the
protection of maritime wealth of our nation. ‘‘Whoever
controls the waters of the Indian Ocean controls the affairs
of the Nations in the region’’ said the Vice Admiral.
Earlier,
Mr E Sadasiva Reddy, Director, RIIPAA introduced the theme and
Prof A Narasimha Rao, Addl Director RIIPAA introduced the
chief guest. In the symposium, papers on Use of oceanographic
data, Maritime geo-physics-an appraisal and Significance of
Indian Ocean in India’s security policy were presented.
Several senior professors and defence personnel including Vice
Admiral BS Randhawa, Director, DMDE, Maj Gen P Mohan Das, Dy
Commandant, MCEME, Brig R Rajagopal, Commander, Andhra Sub
Area, Brig AK Kher, Commandant, 1 EME Centre and other
officials participated. The symposium was jointly organised by
RIIPAA and Navy foundation.

Pak
Raid Foiled in Naushera Sector
Three
Pakistani soldiers were killed and many others wounded when
Indian troops foiled an attack by Pakistan army in Naushera
Sector in J&K on the night of August 17 last. A large
quantity of arms, ammunition and war-like stores have been
recovered.
Indian
troops at a forward post in Kalsian area of Naushera Sector
noticed a group of Pak soldiers entering the Indian side of
the Line of Control from PoK. The alert troops on the post
immediately illuminated the area and started effective fire on
the raiding party. Pakistani posts in near vicinity, on
noticing the raid having failed, retaliated with high-caliber
weapons. The enemy firing was retaliated in equal measure and
raid was beaten back.
