Rescue operations in Gujarat

 

Status of assistance by the Armed Forces in terms of personnel and material -
as on 19.02.2001(0800 Hrs) 

ARMY 

The details of troops taking part in relief operations in Gujarat (Code Named `Op Sahayata’):  

Deployment of troops: 

Strength of Troops:
Approximately 21,500 troops are  deployed in both Bhuj and Ahmedabad Sectors.

Vehicles Deployed :

20 Nos. of 3 Ton vehicles permanently placed at the disposal of Civil Administration at Ahmedabad airfield for lifts to Bhuj.  
  

Aid Provided  :

(a) Surgeries -  11798 (in all
(b) Medical aid given -16,558 (in all)
(c) Evacuation of serious patients to different places:   -484  
(d) Rescued   - 478  
(e) Dead Bodies Recovered -2309 (in all)
(f ) Miscellaneous :-  

(i)
Clearance of bylanes in Bhuj is in progress. 
(ii)
1 Km road cleared in Lodai.
(iii)
Village visited by relief teams - 603 in all.  
(iv)
Search of all damaged houses in Air Force Station Bhuj completed. 
(v)
Team of 475(I) Engineer Brigade proceeded to Ahmedabad to study demolition task. 
(vi)
Task Force Commander visited Bachau, Manfara Ambapar and held discussion with Commander 31 Infantry Brigade , 75 (I) Infantry Brigade Group and Mr Suresh Mehta, Minister of Gujarat (Relief work Kutch distt.). 
(vii)
Surgical Team of Pune deinducted. 
(viii)
One Field Ambulance ex-Ahmedabad and one field Ambulance ex-Jodhpur have been de-inducted.
(ix)
Civil military liaison cell established at Police HQrs.Daily conference being held to coordinate relief effort and deployment of resources. 


AIRFORCE 

Soon after the news of the devastation caused by the Earth Quake, the Indian Air Force had pressed its aircrafts and men in relief activity. Till 16.02.2001 upto 0600 hrs, the Air Force has made 969 sorties carrying civil relief materials, IAF tentage, etc. , the total tonnage of load carried by IAF so far being 4944 tonnes (approx).
700 people have already been evacuated. The Air efforts have been wound up since 17.2.2001 as there is no load to carry now
