Para Prowess

As a part of ‘Group Day’ celebrations, a breathtaking para display was organised near Dighi Hills. About 100 daredevils of the Bombay Sappers descended from an aircraft with their parachutes. The awesome spectacle was witnessed by hundreds of troops and their families including the top brass of the Bombay Sappers. Organised to display the military prowess of the para sappers, the event was a big draw amongst the troops.

The Chinese were the first to defy the law of gravity by flinging themselves from cliff tops with the help of large umbrellas attached to their belts. Parachuting is a dare-devil sport which advanced over the period of time. Paratroopers are specialised forces who are employed in the midst of battle, deep behind the enemy lines to surprise the enemy and to pave way for success. Paratroopers were extensively used during the Second World War in Normandy contributing to the success of the Allied Forces. During 1971 war, 1 Para Battalion performed duties in Bangladesh. Paratroopers require enormous courage and have to be physically tough and mentally alert to carry out their task.

Amongst the paratroopers who took part in the jump were Lt Gen S Pattabhiraman, Colonel Commandant, Bombay Sappers and Brig K Babayya. They once again proved that ‘Sky is not the limit’ for the paratroopers.
