The Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses was established in November 1965 to initiate studies and research in areas relating to national security and the impact of defence measures on economic, political and social developments. Over the years, the Institute has evolved as a premier research institution, carrying out policy-related authoritative studies on national and international security issues. The institute is a registered body under the Registration of Societies Act of 1860 and is governed by an Executive Council elected by the members of the Institute. The Institute is accessible to political leaders, scholars, the media, service officers and others who have interest in issues concerning national security.
IDSA has a well-qualified multi-disciplinary research faculty drawn from academia, defence forces and the civil services, and which representing a diversity of views. Research at the Institute is driven by a comprehensive agenda and by the need to provide impartial analyses and policy recommendations. IDSA’s journals, monographs, briefs, and books are the principal mediums through which these analyses and policy recommendations are disseminated. In addition, the news media also carry the views of IDSA experts in the form of op-eds, interviews and participation in debates.
Forum of Debate
Since its inception, IDSA has served as a forum to debate important aspects of national and international security. The Institute conducts several national and international conferences every year and regularly holds round tables and workshops on important developments. The Weekly Fellows’ Seminars also serve as a forum in which IDSA experts interact with a cross-section of analysts, scholars, journalists, and policy makers.
Publications of the Institute comprise of journals, books, monographs, conference proceedings, reports, Occasional Papers, Delhi Papers and miscellaneous publications like brochures, leaflets, etc. The Institute has exchange arrangements for books and journals with several similar Institutes/ publishers in India and abroad.
IDSA publishes a number of books every year. These include books written by in-house experts and edited proceedings of important seminars and conferences organized by the Institute.
IDSA publishes three journals – Strategic Analysis, Journal of Defence Studies and CBW Magazine. Strategic Analysis has been in print since 1977 and is one of the most established Indian journals in the field of strategic studies. It is now being complemented by the Journal of Defence Studies, which began its innings in the Summer of 2008. The third, more specialized, journal focusing on issues relating to chemical and biological weapons is the CBW Magazine, launched in November 2007.
IDSA provides annual training programmes to civilian and military officers of the Government of India. Lectures by experts from IDSA and from outside form the core of these programmes.
IDSA is funded by the Indian Ministry of Defence. It functions autonomously.
